What do the Arabic symbols mean?
|

|
After the mention of Muhammad 's name, you will often see a small symbol . Enlarged it looks like this: It is pronounced "Salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam" and can be translated as 'May Allah's prayer and peace be upon him', although often Muslims say 'peace be upon him' in English. It is a prayer to Allah, to be merciful with The Prophet Muhammad . It is also said that it in fact means praying for Allah’s praise for The Prophet in the heavens. According to this view, for the Angels or human beings to send prayers upon The Prophet , is asking Allah to praise The Prophet and exalt his status.
“Verily, Allah and His Angels send prayers upon The Prophet . O you who believe! Send prayers upon him and peace!” (Quran chapter 33, verse 56)
Similarly, after a prophets name is the symbol , which enlarged looks like this:
It means 'on him be peace'
After a number of prophets names is the symbol , which enlarged looks as follows:
 meaning 'on them be peace'.
After Allah's name the symobol appears, which enlarged is:
It is pronounced 'SubHanahu wa ta'ala' and means 'Glorified and Exalted is He'.
Finally, after the mention of one the prophets companions' name is the symbol , which enlarged is:
meaning 'Allah is pleased with him'. Allah mentioned them in the Quran with the following words: "And the foremost to embrace Islam of the Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (the citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and gave aid to the Muhajirun) and also those who followed them in goodness. Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success." (Quran chapter 9, verse 100)
